Notes/Trivia:
  • Even before its release, Basic Instinct generated heated controversy due to its overt sexuality and graphic depiction of violence. It was strongly opposed by the GLBT community, who criticized the film's depiction of homosexual relationships and the portrayal of a bisexual woman as a murderous sociopath. Filming in San Francisco was protested by gay and lesbian rights activists and demonstrators, and riot police were present at every location daily to deal with the crowds. When the movie was released, the activists handed out flyers saying who the murderer was to ruin the plot for moviegoers. Nevertheless, the movie opened at the top of the box office its first weekend and went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of the year.
  • Director Paul Verhoeven said that he wanted to make Basic Instinct the first Hollywood mainstream film with an erect penis in it. He didn't get his wish, as Michael Douglas declined to go full frontal (or to let his character be bisexual). However, Verhoeven did get a limp penis on screen, as seen on the murder victim when the police examine his body. Verhoeven also wanted a lesbian love scene to be added to the script, but screenwriter Joe Eszterhas thought such a scene would be gratuitous and the idea was abandoned.
  • Film debut of Jeanne Tripplehorn.
  • The 2006 sequel Basic Instinct 2, with Sharon Stone returning as Catherine Tramell, was critically panned and a box office flop.
