Notes/Trivia:
  • Feature film directorial debut of Edward D. Wood Jr., who plays the title character(s) under the name Daniel Davis. Wood himself was a cross-dresser, and the film, semi-autobiographical in nature, was a plea for tolerance. It was his only film that he didn't also produce.
  • Shot in four days, the film was loosely inspired by the headline-making sex reassignment surgery of Christine Jorgensen, who turned down several offers to appear in the film.
  • Actress Dolores Fuller was Edward D. Wood Jr.'s girlfriend at the time of filming.
  • Ed Wood later resurrected Glen/Glenda in his pulp novels Killer in Drag (1963) and Death of a Transvestite (1967).
  • Widely considered one of the worst films ever made, it has become a cult film due to its low-budget production values and idiosyncratic style. It is listed among the Top Ten Best Bad Films ever made in The Official Razzie Movie Guide.
  • Reissued in 1982 with six minutes of additional footage, including a scene of Glen rejecting a pass made to him by a gay man.
  • A hardcore pornographic remake, titled Glen and Glenda, was released on video in 1994. The title roles were played by Steven St. Croix and Kaitlyn Ashley.
